Learn to Pray in Portuguese at World Youth Day 2023 w/ Padre Nuno Rocha, pastor of Lapa / S. José / Desterro, teaching from his desk on the Camino to Santiago on the Atlantic Coast of Portugal

[RHP VIDEO TRANSCRIPTION]

PADRE NUNO:

Pai Nosso, que estais no céus,

santificado seja o Vosso nome,

venha a nós o Vosso reino,

seja feita a Vossa vontade,

assim na Terra como no Céu.

TODOS [ALL]:1

O pão nosso de cada dia nos dai hoje,

perdoai-nos as nossas ofensas,

assim como nós perdoamos a quem nos tem ofendido

e não nos deixeis cair em tentação,

mas livrai-nos do mal. Ámen.

EXTRA NOTES: DEEPENING THE “WHY” BEHIND the “PAI NOSSO”

1. Meditate on the Gospel “The Lord’s Prayer” [PAI NOSSO]

Review this morning / this evening as part of your regular Rosary or prayer routine: Matthew Chapter 6 (5-14)

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

ABOVE PASSAGE IN THE ORIGINAL GREEK:
MATTHEW CHAPTER 6, 5-16 via BIBLESITE.

“IT’S ALL GREEK TO ME”?

Musings by: The Rosary Hour Podcast
- with Extra Learning Resources on the “Our Father”

Did you succeed at reading the Gospel of Matthew in Greek?

If not, you might say, “it was Greek to me!” This phrase originated from William Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar in the famous Act 1, Scene 2 in which a soothsayer tells Caesar to “beware the Ides of March”. Here is the original text:

CASSIUS. Did Cicero say anything?
CASCA. Ay, he spoke Greek.
CASSIUS. To what effect?
CASCA. Nay, and I tell you that, I’ll ne’er look you i’ the face again. But those that understood him smil’d at one another and shook their heads; but for mine own part, it was Greek to me.

(Julius Caesar, I.2)

This particular idiomatic expression according to the Cambridge English Dictionary became “a way of saying” (in English) “that you do not understand something that is said or written” (CED).

Prayer can sometimes be like this, whereby we utter or hear the words, but do not understand them. In Matthew 13: 9-18 Jesus explains:

“This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 With them indeed is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah which says:

‘You shall indeed hear but never understand,
and you shall indeed see but never perceive.
15
For this people’s heart has grown dull,
and their ears are heavy of hearing,
and their eyes they have closed,
lest they should perceive with their eyes,
    and hear with their ears,
and understand with their heart,
and turn for me to heal them.’

The theme of World Youth Day 2023 / JMJ describes the Blessed Mother’s haste in going to help her cousin Elizabeth. Pope Francis elaborates here on the JMJ website, and it demonstrates the remedy to the problem of blindness / deafness that Jesus presents in the Gospel:

Mary was motivated by the needs of her elderly cousin. She did not hold back, or remain indifferent. She thought more of others than of herself. And this gave enthusiasm and direction to her life.

Each of you can ask:

  • “How do I react to the needs that I see all around me?

  • Do I think immediately of some reason not to get involved?

  • Or do I show interest and willingness to help?”

To be sure, you cannot resolve all the problems of the world.

Yet you can begin with the problems of those closest to you, with the needs of your own community.

Someone once told Mother Teresa:

“What you are doing is a mere drop in the ocean”.

And she replied:

“But if I didn’t do it, that ocean would have one drop less”.

So much of the time, we encounter others who do not know about God, and who have a right to know Him, to love Him and to serve Him as the Holy Spirit draws them to Himself.

When times of spiritual dryness cause us sometimes to shy away from explaining who God is, we find many reasons that might lead to preferring silence, sometimes indefinitely.

While there is certainly a time for silence, there comes a time for tending to the spiritual needs of others. How? Like Our Lady, we too are called to the Spiritual Works of Mercy. According to the USCCB:

“The Spiritual Works of Mercy have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians and spiritual writers throughout history.  Just as Jesus attended to the spiritual well-being of those he ministered to, these Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us to "help our neighbor in their spiritual needs."

But who is my neighbour? And shouldn’t “the Church” be in charge of this ministry? I am just a regular person. How can I make a difference?

These are sometimes questions that caused the writing of the encyclical, CHRISTIFIDELES LAICI https://www.vatican.va/content/john-paul-ii/en/apost_exhortations/documents/hf_jp-ii_exh_30121988_christifideles-laici.html where St. John Paul II notes that the laity and pastoral teams can together help realize these spiritual works of Mercy by embracing the message of 1 Peter 3:15 (New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition):

15 but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you;

Thus, to add to our arsenal of materials which the Rosary teaches us to ponder as we contemplate each mystery, Our Lady’s example encourages us to boldly rediscover the meaning behind each prayer we utter, and in so doing, we are in effect, tending to the spiritual needs of others — those in our communities, our families, our friends, etc. who depend upon us to have eyes to see and ears to hear.

In that spirit, we have quickly put together some extra notes that might help express “the hope” in you.

We shall start with the “Our Father”.

2. Rediscover the Meaning of “The Lord’s Prayer”

Pre-World Youth Day — EXERCISES FOR THE SOUL

  • What does the prayer of the “Our Father” mean to you?

    • Discuss with another delegate attending World Youth Day, or with the pastor accompanying you.

    • Take a moment to check-in. Do I know the meaning of this prayer?

    • Write a short reflection in your travel journal after exploring the following suggested resources.

    • Reflection: if faced with the chance to explain the “Our Father”, in the moment to someone who asks, how would you respond?

3. Learn with St. Thomas Aquinas: Catechesis on “The Lord’s Prayer” (Pai Nosso)

Many do not realize that St. Thomas Aquinas wrote extensive notes on the “Our Father”, the Creed, and the “Hail Mary” to help those he catechized better understand the meaning of these prayers.

  • In this classic book, Aquinas breaks down the “Our Father” (the prayer taught to the Apostles when they said, “Lord, teach us how to pray”).

  • Aquinas explains the Our Father” (Pai Nosso) sentence-by-sentence in his Catechism [CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD and flip through the Table of Contents to find the pages of interest to you today and into 2024 etc].

  • We created an editable and downloadable GOOGLE DOCUMENT to which you can type into to deepen your understanding of the “Our Father” (PAI NOSSO) with Rev. Collins (lifted from his Ecclesiastically approved translation of this text and which is still relevant to readers today.)

  • If you have a question or a related link in another language, place it here for others to read:

4. Listen to Bishop Barron discuss “The Lord’s Prayer” (Pai Nosso)

  • Today’s intellectual exercise

    • A quicker way to deepen ways to explain “Our Father” is to listen to Bishop Barron who gives extensive notes on the Pai Nosso here:

  • NOTE: Bishop Barron develops his teachings on the “Our Father” (Pai Nosso) in a more recent sermon in English here:

  • Meet Bishop Barron at World Youth Day, Lisbon 2023.

    • Bishop Barron, also known as the Bishop of the Internet, will be present at World Youth Day where he will give five talks.

    • Take a moment to listen to Bishop Barron’s mini-lectures on the Our Father, and learn more about Word on Fire Ministry by downloading the free Word on Fire App to your device: https://special.wordonfire.org/digitalapps for free sermons, free videos, free prayer guides, etc.

CONVERSATIONS WITH YOUR SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR:
